Verdi’s story of ‘love and death’ was written and premiered in 1853. It follows the story of Violetta Valery (a high-class courtesan in 19th-century Paris) and her passionate love affair with Alfredo Germont (a young nobleman).

Violetta turns her back on the luxurious life of a kept woman when she finds real love with Alfredo. But under pressure from his father, she renounces that love to redeem their family honour. Violetta surrenders all hopes of happiness and of reviving her failing health, leading to a heart breaking conclusion. She is reunited with Alfredo just before she dies, leaving the cynical and hedonistic Parisian society to ponder on the immensity of her sacrifice.

Based on Alexandre Dumas fils’s novel, La Dame aux Camélias, Verdi’s timeless opera features some of the most evocative arias and melodies including the instantly recognisable Brindisi (the drinking song) and the beautifully poignant finale, Addio del passato.

At Sandringham House, country retreat of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

Directed by Cameron Menzies with Music Director Bryan Evans. Diva Opera’s outstanding cast is led by Gabriella Cassidy as Violetta Valery and Thomas Elwin as Alfredo Germont.
