The care we provide here at Tapping House touches lives far beyond the walls of our Hospice. It’s our fundamental belief that compassion exists in abundance within our local communities, and that together we can make sure no one faces challenges alone.
So many people find it incredibly difficult to talk about dying matters and often feel uncomfortable with issues and emotions around this subject.
Compassionate Communities is a growing social movement that’s determined to dispel myths about dying and bereavement. We aim to help communities become better informed and more confident in having these important conversations, making sure that everyone can approach the end of life with understanding and compassion.
A person living at home with a life-limiting illness may receive healthcare services for less than 5% of their day. A Compassionate Community is one in which everyone recognises how they can make the remaining 95% as fulfilling as possible.
We believe that through encouraging more acts of kindness, talking more, listening more… the impact this would have on someone who is feeling alone, frightened, or overwhelmed would be extraordinary.
Friends, neighbours, family, colleagues. Everyone, at some point in life, will face difficult and challenging times. We want to make it easier through our Compassionate Friends network, that spans across all the areas we cover, to have those very important conversations about death and dying so that people are better informed and able to make choices and decisions about what matters most to them. To empower communities to support each other to live well until the very end of our lives, and to be prepared and enable a good death wherever possible.
Throughout the year we run a series of Compassionate Friends Skills and Future Care Planning Workshops to help people gain the confidence and skills needed to feel more prepared to help each other when facing serious illness, loss and bereavement and is open to anyone. The Future Care Planning workshop provides information about the ways you can begin to plan ahead for the future time when you are less well. It’s open to anyone but especially for people who live with one or more long-term deteriorating illnesses or are in the later stage of life.
None of us can predict what tomorrow may bring. Planning for the future is important for everyone regardless of their current health. It makes sure that everyone knows what you would want if you became sick enough that you couldn’t speak for yourself.
Planning ahead doesn’t have to be scary or difficult.
Why shouldn’t we talk about what we would like so that our final days and hours the best they can be.
Thinking, talking, sharing, and writing down what is important to you about your future takes time and consideration. It’s a way to focus on the things that matter most to you now and how that informs your wishes and priorities about your future care.
If you’re thinking about this, for you or a family member, come and find out a little bit more. Taking these steps now can lead to a more compassionate and supportive community for everyone.
